Yeshayahu Forty-Seven: Depression

“And evil shall come upon you, you shall not know how to remove it by prayer; and calamity shall befall you, you shall not know how to rid yourself of it; and desolation shall come upon you suddenly, you shall not know (Isaiah 47:11).” The worst thing is when one is in a terrible situation, regardless of what it is, and is incapable of figuring out how to extract themselves from it. Whenever something bad happens to me, or I’m facing some kind of problem, my immediate coping mechanism is to try to figure out how to fix things, or to find my way out of a less than pleasant reality. Therefore, to be trapped, incapable of finding the solution, it makes sense that the result would be desolation. When it seems like bad times or sadness are unending, how can a person recover properly?
