After days and days of negative prophecies, there’s finally a break in the doom and gloom. “Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will set up of David a righteous shoot, and he shall reign a king and prosper, and he shall perform judgment and righteousness in the land. In his days, Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely, and this is his name that he shall be called, The Lord is our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6).” There will be an end to the tragedies that the people suffer, and eventually the messianic age that this prophecy alludes to will come. It’s nice to have a light at the end of the tunnel, and to know that a redemption will eventually come.
The chapter goes on to repeatedly denounce false prophets that deliver dishonest information to the people. “Behold I am against those who prophesy with false dreams, says the Lord, and they tell them and mislead My people with their falsehoods and with their bewilderment, but I neither sent them nor commanded them, and they have not availed this people, says the Lord (Jeremiah 23:32).” It’s too easy for the people to be abused by people pretending to have knowledge and wisdom that makes them superior to the rest of society. God needs to root out those who speak in His name without cause to do so. It makes me wonder, who are the false prophets in our society today? Why do we allow them platforms to spread their messages?
