Tehillim Twelve: Smooth Talking

“May the Lord cut off all smooth lips; the tongue that speaks great things (Psalms 12:4).” Note to all smooth talkers: this is definitely not biblically approved. The Torah, and specifically the psalmist, is pro straight-talk, not sugared and smooth phrases that just say what you want to hear.

“Who said, ‘With our tongue we will overpower; our lips are with us. Who is lord over us (Psalms 12:5)?” There’s a massive power to words and speech. It’s been proven repeatedly that words are the strongest tool and weapon that we have. We are taken in by them, hurt by them, and inspired by them. So let’s all be real with our words. Not just say things for their own sake, but to say the things that we truly mean.
