Tehillim Thirty-Four: Peace

This psalm contains a particularly well-known line from Tanakh. “Shun evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it (Psalms 34:15).” This one verse has inspired countless social justice activists, and is used constantly on materials and in sermons having to do with tikkun olam and advocacy. So I’m sure that anything I say has already been said by someone wiser and more articulate than me. But what I personally love about this classic verse is how active it is. It contains several verbs, including both seek and pursue in the latter part of the sentence. I take this to mean that peace isn’t simply something to hope for, or something to think about, but something to treat as a mission. What are the tangible actions that each one of us can take to pursue peace in a world that desperately needs more of it today?
