Nechemia Ten: Taxes

Today’s blog post is short and sweet, and probably majorly out of context as well. But I’m just off of a five hour drive, and I just checked my mail and found my tax return check, and then I saw this verse. “And we set upon ourselves the commandments to give a third of a shekel a year for the service of the Temple of our God (Nehemia 10:33).” The tithes to the Temple and the priests were the equivalent of taxes back in the day, and while I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I find taxes incredibly annoying on a day to day basis. But when I think about the benefits of being a contributing part of the social order, I can almost convince myself that it’s a good thing. Almost…
